Notable Clann Members

The Clann has produced a number of notable figures. Perhaps the most famous is Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh, who, although he had only stumps for arms and legs, overcame the disability. 

In the 16th century Cahir Mac Art Kavanagh, took part in the Geraldine rebellion. Art Kavanagh, a companion of Hugh O'Neill's took part in the dramatic escape from Dublin Castle in 1590.

In the 17th century Brian Kavanagh fought for the Stuarts in Scotland and was described as the tallest man in King James's army. Charles Kavanagh rose to be the military Governor of Prague in 1766.

Several Kavanaghs were officers in the Irish Brigade in the army of France and a branch of the family settled in that country. Kavanagh's also rose to high rank in the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Edward Kavanagh was a member of the US House Of Representatives and Charg? d’Affaires to Portugal.

In 1860 Thomas Henry Kavanagh was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Patrick Kavanagh poet, literary journalist and novelist was born on a small farm in Iniskeen, Co. Monaghan in 1906.

In Australia during the mid 1800's Lawrence Kavanagh was a bushranger and prison escapee.

In the 19th century Julia Kavanagh produced many novels based on French life and also wrote historical biographies.

In the late 19th and early 20th century Joseph M. Kavanagh was a prominent member of the group of Irish artists that studied in Antwerp and Britanny.

In Buenos Aires "Edificio Kavanagh" was the highest reinforced concrete skyscraper built in Argentina.

In Michigan, USA Justice Thomas M. Kavanagh served on the state Supreme Court.  Justice Thomas G. Kavanagh also served on the state Supreme court. Jerome Patrick Cavanagh held the office of Mayor of Detroit from 1962 to 1970.

The city of Edmonton in Canada has been well served by two public servants during the 1970's and 1980's thanks to the husband and wife team of Terence James Cavanagh and June Carol Cavanagh.
