Mary Frances Cavanaugh

Mary Frances Cavanaugh (1917 - 2004)

Mary Frances (Cavanaugh) Leger was born September 11 1917, at 261 Brussells St. Saint John, N.B. She was the second child of the late Herbert Cavanaugh and Annie (Francoeur). Frances’ great-grandparents, Matthew Cavanaugh and Julia-Susan McCabe, arrived in Saint John, from Ireland in 1849. She Married Leonce Joseph Basile Leger 14 Jul 1943 in Saint John, N.B. Together they had four children, two boys and two girls who survive her.

Frances was the former Provincial President of the CWL in 1988, a Life Member of the National Council CWL, former President of the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary, having just received her life membership from the Regional Hospital. She was a recipient of the Canadian Volunteer Award from the Department of Health and Community Services as well as receiving a National Certificate of Merit from the Girl Guides of Canada. Francis was very involved in her community with the South End Development, Right to Life, and a long standing member of the St. John the Baptist Church. Francis with her husband, enjoyed many summers at their Hunter Lake cottage where many parties were hosted for their friends at Rocmaura and Turnbull Nursing homes and the Cathedral Choir.

Frances passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004. She is survived by Paul (Rubye) Leger; Marie (Ian) Darling of Fergus, Ontario; Jeannette (Charles) Perry; and Gerard (Lorraine) Leger. She is also survived by one brother; Vincent Cavanaugh of London, Ontario; one sister Rita (John) McLaughlin of Saint John, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Interment took place in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
