Paul Kavanagh

Paul Kavanagh

It is with sadness that I pass on the news of the death of Paul Kavanagh of Dublin, on November 2nd, 2005.

I first met Paul when I arrived in Dublin as an ignorant colonial about 10 years ago. He took me under his wing and introduced me to the Kavanagh families and history of Portarlington. No question was too stupid, no explanation too tiring, and he was always happy to pore over maps of places that he knew by heart. A quick cup of coffee at the "Gresham" always took hours.

After retiring from his job on the Railways, Paul, as a single man, had lived in "digs" in Dublin for many years. He spent years researching the Kavanagh families of the Portarlington area, and enjoyed his time as a Chaomhanach Clann member. He also ventured into general Genealogical research, and had a deep sense of frustration when he was came across one of those “brick walls” with which we are all familiar.

Over the last year or so Paul retired from Genealogy all together, and in hindsight I suspect he felt he was nearing the time to return to his family in Kilmacow, and his ancestors in Wexford.

Thank you, my friend, for your friendship, your willingness to help, and the memories you leave behind.

Pat Kavanagh, Sydney
