Featured Family Member - John Gerard Cavanaugh


 

J. G. Cavanaugh was known as Gerry to family and friends. He was born in Saint John N.B. on December 09, 1905 to James Henry Cavanaugh and Orilla Hannah Newport. He was the grandson of John R. Cavanaugh and Margaret McNulty, both of whom were born in Ireland. In 1969 he married Barbara Hope McAllister. They had no children.

At the age of 19 he started to work as a printing apprentice at the Telegraph-Journal and was on the night side for 32 years. He changed to the day paper, the Evening Times Globe in 1960 and retired on January 29, 1970 after 40 years in the printing trade. He was foreman of the Telegraph Journal Composing Room until he retired in 1970.

Gerry was a breeder of purebred dogs. He raised more than 300 of several different breeds and won 15-20 championships. He was the owner of the first dog of any breed to win a Canadian-American show. The English Setter became known as International Champion count Mayfly. He was the 1983-1984 honorary president of the Canadian Kennel club. He was the longest-serving member in the Atlantic Provinces. He died in Saint John, December 24th, 1992 at the age of 86.
